Border agents prevent Bologna from being smuggled into the US

March 11, 2022 — US Customs and Border Patrol agents last month found 230 pounds of bologna pork that people tried to illegally smuggle into the United States at Texas border crossings.

Agents made two other seizures of Bologna in January, according to the Dutch DPA. In one of those cases, the driver told authorities that he is selling the bologna in the US for nearly double the price he pays in Mexico, according to a reporter. press release.

Customs and Border Protection and the United States Department of Agriculture are working together to prevent pests and diseases from entering the country through ports of entry.

“People will sometimes be light of these seizures, but there’s nothing funny about these botched smuggling attempts,” Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso director of field operations, said in a statement. Monday press release. “Imports of unregulated pork products have the potential to introduce foreign animal diseases that could harm our country’s agricultural industry.”

A seizure in El Paso at the Bridge of the Americas border crossing on Feb. 25 yielded 110 pounds of bologna, the press release said. A US citizen in a vehicle “issued a negative farming statement,” but upon further inspection, coils of bologna pork were found hidden inside the vehicle.

The driver said a friend paid him to bring in the meat. The man’s wife arrived in a second vehicle and more Bologna was found.

On Feb. 28, 100 pounds of bologna was seized at the Santa Teresa border crossing when an inspection found “abnormalities in the vehicle’s cargo area,” the press release said. The driver, a 59-year-old US citizen, had also issued a negative agricultural statement.

The Dutch DPA imposed civil penalties for failing to declare commercial quantities of bologna. The meat was destroyed by the CBP, because of the rules of the US Department of Agriculture.

The news comes after CBP agents seized 243 pounds of bologna pork in two unrelated incidents in January at the Paso Del Norte and Ysleta border crossings in Texas, the CBP said.
