Holy Cross renames science complex for Fauci

The College of the Holy Cross is renaming the science buildings on its Worcester, Massachusetts campus in honor of one of its most famous graduates, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci.

The college announced Monday that the science complex will be formally known as the Anthony S. Fauci Integrated Science Complex beginning June 11, a date to coincide with Dr. Fauci.

Holy Cross confirmed on Monday that Dr. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Biden’s chief medical adviser on the coronavirus pandemic, will be on campus for the reunion. The National Institutes of Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We are excited to celebrate Dr. Fauci in such a public and lasting way,” Holy Cross president Vincent D. Rougeau said in a statement. “It is fitting that the name of Dr. Fauci graces a complex designed to promote integrated learning across multiple academic disciplines – the kind of broad, collaborative, and holistic thinking one needs to manage health crises like HIV/AIDS, Ebola and Zika, or the current Covid19 pandemic.”

dr. Fauci graduated from the Holy Cross in 1962 as a major in classical with a premedical concentration. He spoke to Holy Cross Magazine in 2021 about how the school’s Jesuit education had influenced his career as an adviser to presidents.

“One of the things I learned when I first briefed a president, President Ronald Reagan, is that when you speak the truth to power, you have to make a decision, not to worry about being nice. want to be found,” he said. said. “Because once you start feeding that into your equation, you might subconsciously find yourself in the situation of telling someone what you think they want to hear. And that’s not the truth. Holding on to truthful principles so fundamentally – that you learn with a Jesuit education – really makes you strong.”

dr. Fauci delivered a virtual speech at the inaugural ceremony of the Holy Cross in 2020, where he again referred to his Jesuit training.

“The whole experience was steeped in the Jesuit spirit of intellectual rigor,” he said. “Precision of thought and economics of speech are principles that have remained my touchstones to this day.”
