Speaking exclusively with, Martine — who is best known for her roles in EastEnders as Tiffany Mitchell, and in Richard Curtis’ romcom Love Actually — explained that her family’s awareness of high cholesterol began with her grandmother, who was “never quite the same” after triple bypass surgery. As a result, both her mother and her aunt started to check themselves regularly and made certain aspects of their lifestyle to proactively keep their cholesterol at a healthy level. It was this personal connection with cholesterol and seeing the damage it can do if levels get too high, which motivated Martine to support Flora ProActiv’s latest campaign in partnership with the only UK cholesterol charity, HEART UK.

HEART UK explains that cholesterol is a type of blood fat, also known as lipid, that we all need to stay healthy. But too much cholesterol can clog your arteries, which are essential for moving blood around the body.

When arteries narrow, it is more difficult for blood to flow through them, which puts a strain on the heart because it has to work harder. Likewise, blood clots can form over the fatty hardened areas of the arteries and cut off blood flow completely, putting a person at risk of stroke or heart attack.

“I was really shocked to find out we had a family history of elevated cholesterol because I didn’t think something like that would affect us,” Martine continues.

†[But] we knew very early on what really helps, such as a lifestyle change and the importance of getting your cholesterol tested.

“There are so many health issues that you can’t always make a difference with, but in many cases, this really allows you to make a difference.”

Knowing that simple changes to your diet, lifestyle and mindset are the key to lowering cholesterol, Martine is a proud ambassador of the latest campaign to encourage people to get tested.

A survey of more than 2,000 adults in the UK, conducted by Flora ProActiv, reveals that one in five (20 percent) of Britons have been diagnosed with elevated cholesterol and a third (33 percent) have never had a cholesterol test.

In light of these shocking statistics, a new series of limited-edition Valentine’s Day cards has been created to help educate the UK about cholesterol and encourage as many people as possible to make simple but healthier choices, such as switching from dairy butter to Flora. ProActiv Spread , which contains added plant sterols – an active ingredient clinically proven to help lower cholesterol.


About what drew her to support the campaign, Martine added: “I think it always helps when you talk about something that has touched your life or your family.

“You really understand the problem because you see for yourself what journey they’ve been on and how things can be turned around. It just felt like the right match.”

The Mayo Clinic and NHS agree that high cholesterol has no symptoms, so the only possible way to know is through a blood test. This can be done through your local GP who can draw blood from your arm or at a pharmacy, with a finger prick test that checks your cholesterol levels in minutes.

“Compared to what everyone else has been through in recent years, it’s actually very simple,” explains Martine of getting a cholesterol test.

“You can go to the doctor and have a little finger prick test done, or you can even get them at your local pharmacy. I know the best thing you can do when you have those problems [high cholesterol] is to start using things like Flora ProActiv because it has less saturated fats. It’s a given for me in my family, it’s been in the fridge for so long!

“I really hope people get tested and if they find there’s a problem they can get it under control because it can make a huge difference in their lives meaning less of a medical problem.”

The NHS explains that while cholesterol levels can be different for everyone, a general guide to what different cholesterol levels should be is as follows:

Total cholesterol – five or lower HDL (good cholesterol) – one or higher LDL (bad cholesterol) – three or lower Non-HDL (bad cholesterol) – four or lower Triglyceride – 2.3 or lower.

In addition to using alternatives such as Flora ProActiv to lower cholesterol, the NHS recommends people eat more fatty fish, brown rice, bread and pasta, nuts and seeds, and fruits and vegetables.

More importantly, it’s best to avoid or eat less of the following:

Meat pies, sausages and fatty meats Butter, lard and ghee Cream and hard cheeses such as cheddar Cakes and biscuits Foods containing coconut oil or palm oil.

Exercise is also critical in lowering cholesterol, and individuals should aim to get at least 150 minutes (two and a half hours) of exercise per week. These can be different exercises such as walking, swimming or cycling.

Other lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption, will help people avoid the need for cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins.
