New Threat to Life: The Internet of Underwater Things

This story is about a frenzied and dangerous project that goes on behind the scenes – with the potential to affect all life on Earth. The monster is dubbed the Internet of Underwater Things, and the initiative’s goal is to completely invade and disrupt the oceans in the name of, anyway, lucrative “sustainable development,” plus military gains.

A 2012 paper defines the Internet of Underwater Things as a “global network of smart interconnected underwater objects capable of tracking vast untapped wetlands.”

This project is an easy candidate for the Darwin Awards. It includes such obviously bad ideas as introducing underwater devices that communicate over long distances via powerful acoustic waves – deafening marine life – as well as installing nodes and devices on the ocean floor, distributing countless underwater vehicles and robots across the oceans, causing electromagnetic interference, and much more.

Personally, I am amazed at the brutality and undeniable stupidity of this undertaking. I wonder if the concept would have gotten even one upvote had the scientists (or the investors) had to try it out on themselves first by installing speakers in their homes that would blast deafening noises at random hours, accompanied by camera enabled drones that would just fly in and out (loudly) while the scientists tried to live their private lives.

My theory is that after a month or two of such a life, the scientists would be clamoring for Mommy and complaining heavenly about injustice. But somehow an attack on marine life on an unprecedented scale is just fine – and even prestigious! Well, respect for life is not taught to scientists.

Early research in the EU

Here’s a neat little 2014 introduction to the Sunrise Project, an early EU imitation devoted to the IoOUT:

“Underwater, we have to use the same communication method used by marine animals, namely sounds or acoustic communication,” said Prof. Chiara Petrioli, project coordinator at Sunrise at the University of Rome. (The system they tout in the video is aptly called “LOAN”.)

This 2018 article on the International Defense, Security and Technology website goes into detail about the SUNRISE project:

“The aim of the European SUNRISE initiative is to provide the missing tools for unprecedented monitoring and exploration of marine environments, extending the concept of Internet of Things to marine environments. IoUT promises oil and gas exploration [speaking of sustainability]monitoring of waterways and marine environments, production of renewable energy from offshore wind turbines and sustainable use of the ocean’s resources.

Analogous to the IoT, a military Internet of Things (MIOT) is expected to be developed, consisting of a large number of platforms, ranging from ships to aircraft to ground vehicles to weapon systems. Military is also interested in building Military Internet of Underwater Things (IoOUT) to communicate with underwater vehicles, ships and submarines.

A highly prized, long-sought but unwired, distributed, networked submarine surveillance and weapons systems. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency [DARPA] has made a request to identify technological breakthroughs that enable fully integrated and networked submarine systems.”

DARPA’s “Ocean of Things”

Speaking of DARPA, according to Forbes, they were “contracted for the next phase of the development of the Ocean of Things (OoT), a project to seed the seas with thousands of floating sensors, monitoring everything from airplanes to submarines. “

In their own words, “DARPA’s Oceans of Things program seeks to enable sustained maritime situational awareness across large ocean areas by deploying thousands of small, low-cost floats that form a distributed sensor network.

Each smart float contains a range of commercially available sensors to collect environmental data, such as sea surface temperature, sea condition and location, as well as activity data on commercial ships, aircraft and even marine mammals moving through the area. The floats periodically send data via satellite to a cloud network for storage and real-time analysis.”

SEANet project

A little earlier, in 2018, the SEANet project was presented to the public in the United States, funded by the US National Science Foundation, to “develop an open platform for flexible experiments with underwater network systems”.

In this scenario, ocean of things (OoT) will play an important role, as it can serve as a node between Internet of things (IoT) and Internet of underwater things (IoOUT). The OoT device can not only collect data through underwater methods, but also can use radio frequency over the air.

For underwater communications, underwater acoustic communications (UWA COMMs) are the most effective way for OoT devices to exchange information, but it is always plagued by doppler shift and synchronization errors.”

Given the known effects of wireless radiation, this is devastating.

A serious warning from the author of the “Invisible Rainbow”

Arthur Firstenberg, the trailblazing author of the “Invisible Rainbow,” published an alarming, must-read overview of the internet’s underwater things.

According to Arthur Firstenberg, “Some underwater acoustic modems on the market are capable of producing sound as loud as 202 decibels. That’s equivalent to 139 decibels in the air. It’s as loud as a jet engine at a distance.” of 30 feet and is above the pain threshold in humans.

These modems emit modulated sound at frequencies ranging from 7 kHz to 170 kHz, covering almost the entire hearing range of dolphins, which use sound for hunting and navigation.” He also cites a paper on the impact of noise pollution on ocean life. :

The “Ocean Panel”

Call me naive – but to my ears the repeated use of vague language, accompanied by moving pictures of indigenous people, is a little off-putting. It has been shown time and again that ‘sustainable’ projects such as these tend to displace the indigenous population and serve no other purpose than to bring new profits to the old profiteers.

And by the way, finally, this is what “sustainable” ocean treatment looks like according to their own report. Roaring turbines. On acoustic grounds alone, I would say, fact check: not true.
