A maternity hospital in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol was badly damaged by a Russian airstrike on Wednesday that left at least 17 people injured or injured, Ukrainian officials told The Associated Press.

Video and photos showed scorched vehicles and trees outside the building and people helping the injured leave the area, including a pregnant woman on a stretcher. The Associated Press said the blast created a crater at least two stories deep, blew out windows and ripped away much of the front of the building. No deaths were immediately reported.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted a video showing debris and broken furniture in what appears to be the hospital’s interior.

“Maripol. Direct attack by Russian troops in the maternity hospital,” Zelenskyy tweeted. “People, children are under the wreckage. atrocity! How much longer will the world be an accomplice that ignores terror? Close the sky now! Stop the murders! You have power, but you seem to be losing humanity.”

“Today Russia has committed a huge crime,” Volodymir Nikulin, a top regional police officer, said as he stood in the hospital ruins, according to The Associated Press. “It is a war crime without any justification.”

Mariupol has been heavily bombed and most residents have been without power, heating, water or telephones for more than a week, according to The Associated Press.

Mariupol’s deputy mayor, Sergei Orlov, said 1,170 residents had died, and 47 were buried in a mass grave on Wednesday, The Guardian reported.

“It’s medieval,” he said. “It is pure genocide. The attack is not only insidious. It’s a war crime. They are attacking us with aviation, grenades, multiple rocket launchers.”
