Be a non-smoker Limit alcohol consumption Eat healthy Take part in regular exercise Avoid sitting or lying down for long periods.

“Low-salt and/or Mediterranean diets are recommended to reduce the risk of another stroke,” according to the American Stroke Association.

“Stroke survivors are [also] encouraged to exercise or be active for at least 10 minutes, four times a week, or to exercise at least 20 minutes more vigorously twice a week.”

Most patients who have had an ischemic stroke — from a blood clot to other blockages in blood vessels in the brain — need medication.
